Head Coach: Nina Wallace

Coach Nina will be returning to an exciting season with the Spring Cypress Stingrays! She has been teaching and coaching swimming and water polo at Cypress Creek High School for 11 years and teaches Engineering as part of the Project Lead the Way program.

She has been swimming since the age of 8 when she started out swimming summer league and won most improved swimmer that 1st summer; that's when she realized swimming was a part of her. Nina started swimming ATEX club team and swam throughout high school at Klein Oak. Nina has been coaching since she was 17 and went to A&M where she continued coaching and swimming. Nina has been the head coach at Mayde Creek High School where she was voted Regional coach of the year and head coach for summer league at Heatherwood, Barkers Ridge and Norchester. She also coached for Mayde Creek Aquatic Club, specializing in preparing junior high students for the rigor of high school tryouts and practices.

Coach Nina is very competitive, enjoys working out, sewing and painting. She has 3 children- Reid 18, Charlie 12 and McKenzie 7. She can not wait to push the swimmers to a successful season while having fun along the way!

Assistant Coach: Leah Ortiz

Leah is a born and raised Houstonian. She started swimming with the Colony Creek Mariners summer league team, which eventually led to her swimming club; the rest, as they say, is history. Leah swam for Fleet during her high school years while also representing Cy-Creek HS. She followed up her club career by swimming collegiately for the University of Houston.

Leah began teaching lessons at the age of 17 for Fleet First. This allowed her to make the easy transition to coaching when she retired from swimming. She just recently started coaching for Fleet, joining in August of 2016. Leah has devoted herself to the swimmers and families of Fleet and is excited for the future of the club. She is currently working on finishing her degree at University of Houston.

Assistant Coach: Sharon Thomas

Sharon has been a member of the Stingray family for over 14 years. She was a Stingray swimmer parent for 13 years, served on the Stingrays Board and has been assisting our Coaching staff the past several summers. Sharon has always had a love for the water-- swimming summer league back in Chicago; lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons throughout high school and college, and enjoys scuba diving and snorkeling on vacations. For the past 15 years, she has been a local swim instructor --10 years at Cy-Fair Swim Club’s Fleet First program and private lessons throughout the community over the past 5 years. She loves teaching and helping swimmers learn water safety.

Sharon and her husband Chris and daughter Kate (a past Stingray who attends the University of California Santa Barbara) have lived in Longwood for over 17 years. Sharon holds her Masters and Bachelors degrees from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and has a 20 + year career in Advertising. In her free time, you can find her working out, walking her two dogs, traveling and this past year she started a college consulting business. Sharon looks forward to helping our Stingrays build their confidence and endurance, while developing and refining their strokes.

Assistant Coach: Evelyn Selz

Evelyn Selz began swimming competitively at the age of five, when she joined the Spring Cypress Stingrays. Since then, she has been a member of the team for eleven seasons, swimming her last meet for the Stingrays at Ponderosa last July. She also swam for Cy-Fair High School, earning All-American status, and Fleet, where she taught swim lessons last summer. Her best events are butterfly and the individual medley. Currently, she attends Texas A&M University in College Station in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition with a Psychology minor. Evelyn is thrilled to be able to coach this year and therefore give back to the team that first sparked her love for the sport. Go Stingrays!
